This kinda remind me of this is the year i have my first mac. I bided and won an Apple Powerbook G3 Pismo from eBay and the shipping was almost a months. The most heavy mac i won from eBay was an old iMac G3. Ohh… and i skipped the whole PowerPC G4 and G5 generation and jump ship to the intel core era.

OD: Do you know what keeping me alive until now?
Me: Ahh.. exercise?
OD: That’s right! exercise. When i was 40 year old, i had to undergoing heart bypass because of my food intake habits, i like all kind of foods, especially beef, deer meat or any meat you can mention but except dog, cat and horse. I love foods.
Me: I love foods too.
OD: When i diagnosed that i need to do the surgery, the doctor said to me, hey man, u got 4 months to 1 year to survive if you keep on with your old eating habits. Yo better change it right away.
Me: Wow… that’s really a bad news.
OD: Yeah. but guess how old am i now?
Me: 50
OD: No. No. No. I’m 68 year old.
Me: You seriously kidding me. You are like 50 plus.
OD: I’m not kidding. I’m 68. Look at me, i used to pray for god to give me another 10 years after the surgery so that i can see my kid growing as at that time, my kid still very young. But god gave me bonus of 18 years.
Me: That’s a super bonus from god.
OD: Yes. I am very blessed. I exercise everyday and i didn’t take any rice since the recovery. Remember exercise and food is important to survive longer.

We also talked about how our modern world and our work environment make us more unhealthy. I said, we often work in air condition environment that may make us more lazy to workout.

+for my memory of this old man advise. Don’t forget to exercise.

Turn on the Vibration mode in controller to feel the bass vibration and also the level of vibration can be adjust to suite user listening.

The answer is YES. Ever since I downgraded my iPhone 3G  from iOS 4.2 to iOS 3.1.3, I missed one of the feature that I used often. I.e. the FOLDER. As in iOS 3.1.3, I had to used a little tweak software called CategoriesSB to intimidate the near function of FOLDER but I found the UI is not as presentable for me. So, I open safari browser and hits for “custom iOS for iPhone 3G”, the google search popped up very good results and here’s we had; whited00r to save us, the old iDevice user from the awfully slowness of iOS 4.

Whited00r is a custom iOS for old iDevices that do not supported by apple latest firmware, this include the original iPhone (aka iPhone 2G), iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 1G and 2G. Although iPhone 3G is officially support by apple through iOS 4.2.1, I still find speed and battery life spent is big issue for me. Sorry to said that but playing games using iOS 4 on iPhone 3G is pain in the ass, app such as Tap Tap 4, Chuzzle and other heavy graphic intensive games often quit unexpectedly.  I once suspect the ram management / usage in iOS4 is needed more compare to iOS3 where this is not sufficient for old iDevice that came with 128MB of memory.

Speed and Battery in whited00r

Speed is almost still identical as iOS3 with home screen wallpaper and multitasking activated.

Battery life can considered moderate. Someday I can get my iPhone 3G standby for near 36 hours by turning off 3G, Push mail, less frequent mail checking and around 45 minutes of website surfing using WIFI.

Recently when i went to Singapore for Iron Maiden 2011 concert, i have discovered these little tip. Below tips really help my iPhone 3G to survived 1 days and 20 hours because i forget to brought my charger.

1. Turn off 3G signal.

2. Turn off Notification.

3. Turn off wi-fi.

4. Turn off Cellular data.

5. Turn off Location.

6. Turn off Bluetooth.

7. Don’t check email using apple pre-install mail.app. Used mobile safari to check email and don’t do it frequently.

8. Convert all high bit rate track to 128 kbps AAC.

9. Used earphone not headphone for listening music.

10. Turn off Battery percentage. (As my iPhone 3G is jailbreaked)

I recap what was my usage on 5 Hours, 42 minutes. Listening to 128 kbps AAC music mostly, watched a couple of music videos and surfing website via Singapore free wi-fi and checking some social app via DiGi 3G when i came back to Malaysia. I turn on the airplane mode when i found out that DiGi doesn’t activate my roaming. Hope my humble little tips also can help iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 user to save battery.

• Time – iTunes was using less time to upgrade and restore to latest backup. It’s took less than 30 minutes with 700 songs, 10 music videos, 500 photos and 70 apps to restore to the iPhone.
• Speed – Loading photos app, notes and surfing thru safari is pretty fast compare to iOS 4.1. Some games had some speed improvement especially Chuzzle.
• New icon on Voice Memo.
• New font to choose for Notes. (Chalkboard, Helvetica and Marker Felt)
• New “Change with Buttons” in sound setting.
• New “Character Count” in Messages setting.

Here’s one that need to mention,

• Folder access take around 2-3 sec to loading.

I can concluded that iOS 4.2.1 really a speed bump and fix most of the bug from iOS 4.0 (Hate it). Worth your time to upgrade it. Lastly, my iPhone 3G with iOS 4.2.1 is jailbreaked with latest redsnow & Cydia. Check redsnow out on dev-team blog.

iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 3G

Head-fier would recognize FIIO cause they are the maker of popular portable headphone amplifier E5 as tiny as iPod Shuffle. After the purchase of Reference-Audio’s Secret Amp, I was unhappy with the original mini-to-mini cables that connected between my iPod video to the Secret Amp and paired with Grado SR60. The sound of the original cable is muffled, like it is covered with a cloth, it was weak in mids and highs.  The details of the instruments of heavy metal, post punk and punk sounded not that alive. The sound quality is not that enjoyable and I decided to order a DIY mini-to-mini cable or Line-out Dock (LOD). I choose a LOD because LOD will bypass the iPod internal amplifier and direct to the Secret Amp.  Theory is that the bypass will exploit the full potential of the Secret Amp. *The mini-to-mini cable is bundled with Secret Amp.

Review

FIIO L3 is a piece of good quality LOD. Even some website claims that FIIO L3 is a high quality LOD that used high-grade Made in Japan cable.  The length of the cable is 8 cm. The FIIO L3 comes with gold plated 3.5mm audio jack and gold-plated dock. But I bet you this kind of gold-plated will brush off after some usage.  The FIIO L3 supports a lot of iPod model such as iPod Classic, iPod Nano, iPod Touch, iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G(S). I manage to paired the FIIO L3 LOD on my iPod Video and iPhone 3G. They work flawlessly on both iDevice. This is my first experience with LOD and the FIIO L3 is working great for me.  I guess I can listen to more well balance sound comparing with the mini-to-mini cable. The sound is clear and crisp. Even the bad recording of the songs is kinda reveal to my ear. As I recall when listening to The Cranberries, New New York in lossless format many time and the sound quality of this track just very harsh. For those who have limited budget or first timer to LOD, this FIIO L3 is a good bargain. Lastly, the price is below MYR50.

Update #1

Ever since i updated my iPhone 3G to iOS4.1, the FIIO L3 is not working and it’s hang. Hopefully we get fix from newest iOS. iOS3.1.3 and below should be no problem for FIIO L3.

Update #2

FIIO L3 is working on iPhone 3G with iOS 4.2.1.

1. Battery Life, still bad and very bad.

2. Unresponsive keyboard, sluggish, very slow loading of iOS4 native apps such as Mail, iPod and Setting.

3. I give up Folder, iBooks and other features of iOS4. IPhone 3G just can’t handle iOS4 so well. Most probably, iOS4 is written based on iPhone 3G(s) and iPhone 4.

Jailbreak iOS 3.1.3

There are two or more method available for jailbreak iOS 3.1.3. I choose “spirit”  cause it’s truly simple. Spirit jailbreak is for official unlocked iPhone 3G only. Here’s the guide from youtube.com.

I can wait for the slow loading of app but i can’t live with my battery life that can’t even survived one day. With or without 3G signal turning on, the iPhone 3G battery drain so fast. Not even one minutes browsing the web with 3G signal, the battery gauge on my iPhone 3G show 98%. (I did turn on the battery percentage on my iPhone 3G after jailbreak.)

iOS4 is killing iPhone 3G battery?
I’ve observed that Multitasking and Home screen wallpaper really suck the battery faster. Turning on mail fetch or push will worsen more.

Solution?
I’m going to restore my iPhone 3G to the stock iOS4 and not to jailbreak it for a couple of days. I’m going to observe how long the battery can last.

P/S: Seriously guys, if you don’t need Folder or iBooks, please stick to iOS 3.1.3.

and one more thing… Apple try to make iphone 2G and 3G user to upgrade to their latest toys again, iPhone 4.
